Matching into a floor that's already there
Every plank run is manufactured to a colour and grain spec, and that spec drifts slightly between production batches even within the same product line. That is the whole reason an exact match into flooring that has been down for a few years is rare, not a sign anyone did anything wrong. Plank direction changes the read of a room too: running boards parallel to the longest wall, or toward the room's main light source, is what makes a floor look settled rather than busy, and it is a decision worth making before the first plank is cut, not partway through.
Where the job gets judged
Georgia's humidity swings through the year more than most places, and wood-look material moves with it, which is part of why the perimeter gap and the fit method both matter as much here as the colour does. Running one floor through several rooms without a threshold in between reads as a single, deliberate space. But it means every transition to a different surface, into tile, into carpet, into a hard floor of a different material, is where a job gets judged, because that is the one seam where a cut has to be exact instead of hidden under a run of identical planks.
One customer had two different existing wood floors already in the house and wanted the rest matched to run alongside them. They bought the material themselves at a big-box store and booked us for the install only, which is a job we take on the same as a full supply-and-fit.
Direction and light
The direction decision happens before the colour one
Two houses can buy the identical plank and end up with rooms that read completely differently, because one runs the boards toward the window wall and the other runs them across it. Light travels down the length of a plank more than across it, so the direction a floor runs changes how much of the grain and the seams you actually notice standing in the doorway.
If the house has a long hallway feeding into an open living space, that hallway usually sets the direction for everything downstream of it, so it is the first thing we look at, not the last.
Worth deciding early
Which wall the boards run parallel to. Where the main light comes from during the part of the day the room actually gets used. Which existing floor, if any, this run has to sit next to without a threshold in between.
