Luxury vinyl plank
A clear film over a printed grain, thick enough in the right rooms to survive whatever the house throws at it. Solid vinyl core, click-lock or glued, and one whole house is a day and a half of work.
What the wear layer actually buys you
The wear layer is the clear top coat sitting over the printed grain layer, and it is quoted in mils, thousandths of an inch. That film is the entire difference between a plank that still looks right in year eight and one that dulls in the traffic lane by year three. Under it sits either a solid vinyl core or a laminate core built on fibreboard, and that choice matters more near water than most people expect: a solid vinyl core does not swell if it gets wet at the edges, a fibreboard core can. Fitting method is a separate decision again. Click-lock planks float over the subfloor and are the faster, less invasive install; glue-down bonds every plank to the substrate and holds tighter in a room that sees a lot of foot traffic or furniture weight.
Before the first plank goes down
Plank has to sit in the room and come to the room's temperature and humidity before it gets fitted, so a delivery does not go straight from the truck to the floor. The perimeter gets a small expansion gap under the baseboard so the floor has somewhere to move as the house breathes through a Georgia summer and winter. And a floating floor will show whatever the subfloor is doing underneath it, a high spot or a soft spot telegraphs straight through the plank, so getting the subfloor flat comes before getting the colour right.
One whole-house job here, three bedrooms plus a living room and dining room, went down in a day and a half once the material was on site. Someone walked the samples with the customer first so the style was already decided before the truck showed up.

Which room earns the thicker one
A back bedroom that sees socked feet twice a day does not need the same wear layer as a hallway that carries the whole house, or a kitchen that takes a dropped pan and a dog's claws in the same week. Selling everyone the thickest option is an easy way to sell more material. It is not the same as fitting the right floor for the room it is going in.

How the traffic changes the answer
Low traffic, a spare room or a formal space nobody walks through daily, sits at the lighter end of residential wear layers. Whole-house traffic, an open kitchen into a living area, sits at the heavier end. Everything else lands somewhere between, and that is exactly the conversation worth having in the showroom before you pick a style off a phone screen.
